Who is the Lazy Owner?

My name is Jim and I am the Lazy Business Owner. In 2004, I partnered with a fellow co-worker at the time and created a web development and marketing company, IVJR. Shortly after we started, we began working with a client who helped us lead down the path of becoming “Lazy Owners”.

The Lazy Owner is not the “pie-in-the-sky”, “get-rich-quick” that you see from a lot of web sites today. Paradoxically, it’s all about setting up a business that can run itself. That is the only way to truly have a successful business. Once you get to that point (and it takes A LOT of hard work) you can have a much more enjoyable life.

It may seem ironic but the best way to achieve a lifestyle in which you don’t have to work is to set that as your goal and then working very hard until you get there. But if you just want to constantly work, your business will inherently be less successful in the long run.

Once we realized this, we started down the right path to make IVJR more successful. It’s still a work in progress and everything is not fully automated just yet but that is the direction we are going and it is working for us. If we hadn’t followed the advice of the Surfing Guru (explained more in the blog), the business never would have even had a chance.

The goal of this blog is to provide some of the lessons that we learned from the Surfing Guru, to provide some real-life examples of how it affects the businesses I work on, and some other observations to help out other owners who are trying to grow their business to a successful level.
