Life is Nice When You Don’t Have to Work
One of the main reasons you I work to being a Lazy Owner is the freedom to only work if I want, when I want. Here’s my schedule for the past week:
- Thursday - It’s the start of baseball season so I wanted to watch a few games. I hadn’t watch my team yet that season so I decided to watch the afternoon game. The game started in the early afternoon so after tying up a few things in the morning, I had lunch and stated watching the game. Of course I had to have a few warm beers and some hot dogs to recreate that summer baseball feel. But I sat in front of the TV the rest of the afternoon, watching a great come-from-behind victory. After drinking during the day, I wasn’t going to do any work the rest of the day so I hung out, watched some more baseball and a few movies. What a rough day.
- Friday - Friday was a big night. We were going to NYC to eat at one of my favorite restaurants, Nobu and to see a show. I didn’t plan to do work that day so I slept in, hit the driving range shortly after lunch, and then headed into New York for some drinks before early dinner and the show
- Saturday - Final Four. I was psyched for these games but what a disappointment. Oh well, it was a great day to have a few burgers and beer, watch some baseball, and then some basketball
- Sunday - Just catching up on some stuff and working out since I’d just been a slug the past few days. Now it had been over 3 days since I had done any work or even checked e-mail
- Monday - On Sunday, I talked to one of my buddies who has a pretty open schedule as well and we decided to play a little golf the next few days. We headed down to the Atlantic City area and played a round of golf and did some gambling that night. I made more money that night than I did not doing any work that day (which was a nice amount to live on).
- Tuesday - Monday was a late night and the weather was too nice to pass up another round of golf so we did another day of the same and planned on doing the same on Wednesday
- Wednesday - Same as Tuesday
So now it’s Thursday and I’ll do a little bit of work. It’s almost the weekend so I’m not going to kill myself. The reason I’m able to do this is I have processes in place to take care of things.
- All our customer service issues come in through our Customer Service rep and she handles any issues or new clients.
- Marketing is automated at this point so I just have to make tweaks to the marketing as needed (which is about all I’ll do today or tomorrow)
- Sales is handled by a sales rep sufficiently motivated to get new customers. They were still doing their thing while I was away
Sure, I lose a bit of money by not working the past week, but the free time is worth it to me. Operationally, everything runs pretty smoothly. There are a few things I need to take care of now but most of my work is around building new products and improving what we already have. That can be done whenever I want.
